FAQs
How does The Iron Egg work?
The Iron Egg is made from cast-iron in a factory that manufactures cast-iron pots and pans.
Using cast-iron cookware to fortify food with dietary iron is a tradition that dates back to the ancient Chinese.
This concept was proven by researchers who tested 20 foods, the results of which were published in the July 1986 issue of the Journal of the American Dietetic Association.
Researchers found that cooking in an iron skillet greatly increases the iron content of many foods. Acidic foods that have a higher moisture content, such as applesauce and spaghetti sauce, absorbed the most iron.
Using this science, we developed The Iron Egg as an alternative to cast-iron cookware. When the water is at boiling point, and slightly acidified (a few drops of lemon juice, for example) The Iron Egg will release iron into the water / food.

Why do iron supplements make me feel sick?
For an iron supplement to be properly absorbed, it has to reach your intestine (where it then gets absorbed into your lymphatic stream and released into your liver). But before it gets there, your stomach acids will try to break it down.
The cells that line your intestine can only absorb a certain amount of iron at a time. If they get bombarded, that increases the risk of unabsorbed iron and painful and unpleasant problems.
Avoid iron overloading by spacing out how you ingest iron by sipping iron-infused water throughout the day using The Iron Egg.
Will The Iron Egg rust?
The Iron Egg has been designed with a ‘crevice free’ surface area to minimise the risk of rust. The Iron Egg is made from cast iron and if left wet, the natural process
of oxidation means that rust may occur. This is why it is important to fully and thoroughly dry The Iron Egg after each use. If rust does form on The Iron Egg it can be
removed using a scrub pad and dish soap.
Why an ‘egg’ shape?
A key finding from the classic study first published in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association was that 'frequent stirring' was a factor that increased the amount of iron released.
During a period of rigorous product development, The Iron Egg was designed to have a slightly pointed 'tip' to enable a rolling motion during usage.
Robust laboratory testing has since proved the effectiveness of 'rolling' to maximise the amount of iron released.
What happens if I boil The Iron Egg for too long?
The Iron Egg should be removed from the pot after 10 minutes. It is recommended that you set a timer to ensure accuracy of ‘simmer time’. If The Iron Egg has been
left in the pot too long, the taste of the water may be altered. It is recommended that you do not drink this water. Likewise, it is important to remove The Iron Egg from
liquid based meals, such as soups, after 10 minutes.
Why does my water have a ‘metallic’ taste?
Sometimes if too much lemon juice has been added, the water becomes too acidified. This can result in increased levels of iron being released from The Iron Egg
which may result in a metallic taste. Also, if The Iron Egg has been left in the pot for longer than 10 minutes, this may result in a metallic taste. It is recommended that
you do not drink this water.
How long before I notice a difference?
Increasing your intake of iron on a daily basis should improve the symptoms of low iron with three months.
My iron has returned to normal levels, can I give The Iron Egg to someone else?
Yes. It is important to retain the packaging as this provides information about how to use and care for The Iron Egg. If The Iron Egg has not been used for a long
time, it is recommended that The Iron Egg is cleaned using dish soap and a scrub pad before use.

Re-usable - Zero Waste
Many pills and supplements are packaged in a way that is not environmentally friendly.
Blister packs are difficult to recycle because they typically contain both metal and plastic. The blisters or cavities that contain the pills are often made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is not widely recycled and can contaminate recycling bundles.
While many manufactures of pills and supplements are attempting to make their packaging more eco-friendly, The Iron Egg surpasses all efforts.
Put simply, buy The Iron Egg once and have a lifetime supply of iron- it doesn't get more eco-friendly than that!
